Education

Mobilab attaches great importance to the link between research and education at Thomas More and has a strong internal and external network. Our expertise and infrastructure are indissolubly connected with the courses of Thomas More. Several of our researchers are both researcher and teacher. In this way, the transfer from research to education is easily made. But the students come to us as well. We work closely together with i.a. the following programs:

  • Bachelor of Orthopaedics (Orthopaedic Technology and Footwear technology)
Future bachelors in orthopaedics often visit our gait lab to take the courses of gait analysis and biomechanics and measuring techniques. Moreover, they are part of the target group of our projects that are ongoing in the research domains of orthopaedic technology and sports and rehabilitation technology.  If they learn to align a lower leg prosthesis, for example, they can use our useful Ticoon tool, and the results of our patient studies. We will also gladly help the students with their thesis. A thesis on one of our projects, or some measurements to help them, anything is possible.

  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy
Our knowledge about technology in healthcare is shared by a number of lectures to the students of Occupational Therapy. In the project weeks, we also gladly invite the students in our Experience Lab to put the use of technology in care into practice. We use their experience as well, e.g. to validate our designs. For instance, in the research project Arthe, we developed a portable brace to improve home rehabilitation. Students of Occupational Therapy tested this for us on patients for their thesis. In addition, we gave a couple of students of Occupational Therapy the chance to follow the "Intensive Program" Smart Homes with our contacts in Finland.

  • Bachelor of Nursing
Researchers of Mobilab give guest lectures in the basic course of nursing and the Banabas on Geriatrics and Psychogeriatrics.  In addition, some of the nursing students also got the chance to follow the "Intensive Program" Smart homes in Finland. Students also participated in our research on the development of an innovative breakfast shake for persons with dementia.

  • Bachelor of Applied Psychology and Bachelor of Audiology
We work closely together with both the course of Applied Psychology as well as the course in Audiology to familiarize the students with technology. Once they are in the field, these students will have to deal with a multidisciplinary approach, and technology can be a means of communication between the different disciplines. Therefore, we introduce the students already during their studies to technology, i.a. by involving them in the validation of new methods and techniques in healthcare.

  • Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics
Students participated in the research on the development of an innovative breakfast shake for persons with dementia.

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Design and Production Technology
We also collaborate with our colleagues in Mechelen. The initial steps to collaboration with the course of Design and Production Technology have been taken. To be continued!

We also participate in the development of new courses. Our researchers have been using their expertise for the start of the new bachelor Sports and Exercise. This brand new program is closely linked to our own interests and expertise, so we look forward to further collaboration.
We do not only meet students of Thomas More, students of the academic programs are also visiting Mobilab regularly. We work closely together with the major in Biomedical technology at the bachelors and masters in Industrial Sciences. Our researchers are also teaching in this program.

Every year, several theses are supervised by researchers of Mobilab.
